Community Records and our close knit group of musical friends are trying to help out the Gulf of Mexico the only way we know how:

One year ago today on April 20th, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon’s safety mechanism’s failed and the Gulf of Mexico was filled with 4.9 million barrels of oil. That’s 205.8 million gallons of crude…
19 times more than the Exxon Valdez spill in 1989 and one drop too many. Although news coverage of these facts has died down, we all must be aware that the situation will probably never be back to normal.

On this Wed, April 20th, 2011 (one year after the gulf coast oil spill), Community Records releases a benefit compilation to help create awareness and progress in the wake of the BP drilling disaster. For the compilation, Community Records has aligned with three different independent record labels from across the United States who will be submitting songs: Asian Man Records in CA, Plan-It-X Records in IN, and Quote Unquote Records in NY. The compilation has over 35 songs and will include literature, movies, and other media about the spill.

The compilation will be available for 100% FREE download on CommunityRecords.org with the opportunity to donate to the Gulf Restoration Network, a 16 year old environmental non-profit based in New Orleans. The GRN works to empower people to protect and restore the natural resources of the Gulf of Mexico. Since the drilling disaster, they have been committed to the fight of holding BP accountable and ensuring a disaster of this magnitude never happens again. Head Above Water will only be released as a digital download to avoid the use of new plastics as well as gasoline to ship them across the country.

War is hell, and I’m not about to claim that I have any comprehension as to what extent this is true. But when I heard that in January of 2009, the number of KIA that were a result of the opposition, in Iraq, were FEWER, than the amount of combined friendly and suicidal American deaths, I had some Idea, to what extent, war - is - hell. And moreover, that we seemingly don’t give a fuck.

The men and women of our armed forces have been taken advantage of. They deserve a more competent hierarchy, whose supposed “intelligence” of the “enemy” doesn’t result in fucking “smart” bombs falling on US battalions. They deserve a support system that listens and acts accordingly to the anguish of losing one’s best friend. Sure, war is what they signed up for; this is not up for debate. But to think that our militaries incompetence and apparent disregard for our soldier’s well-being has led to such figures, is completely fucked.

So, what’s the Brink about? Well, I guess the long and short of it is this: The Brink points to the other side of the wartime news headline, where the selflessness of our soldiers is seemingly forgotten, and the humanity that’s shared amongst us, is lost in the smoke and mirrors, of war-time agendas.

We must keep sight of this, in order to progress towards their EARNED, and DESERVED, treatment.

So, Steve asked me to write a little something for the ol’ blog explaining what this song is about. The cheap, quick, and easy answer is that it’s about dealing on some dude with a baseball bat cos he beat up his girl, but in reality it’s about NOT dealing on a dude with a baseball bat. I’m sure most of us have known (or will know, at some point in our lives) a girl who’s gotten mixed up with the wrong guy (or vice versa, or a guy who’s gotten mixed up with the wrong guy, or a girl who’s gotten mixed up with the wrong girl, whatever), and sometimes that guy is REALLY the wrong guy, and pulls some really fucked up shit, and it seems like the right thing to do to is go beat the ever-loving shit outta that guy. BUT, the reality of most domestic abuse situations is that taking actions like that is only gonna perpetuate the cycle, and, ultimately, it’s not your decision to make. So despite the fact that every bone in your body is telling you to go beat the guy to a bloody pulp, taking a step back and trying to be supportive is a better first move. Trying to talk your friend into breaking off the relationship, reporting the abuse, and seeking counselling is a good place to start. Social services aren’t perfect, and they’re understaffed and losing more funding every day, but at least they’re trying. So before you grab that bat, or tire iron, or whatever, stop and think for a minute about the ramifications of your actions. I despise the tyranny of the strong over the weak, and I’m all about advocating violence towards men that beat women, but only after all other options have been examined and exhausted. So yeah, I guess that’s what this one is about.
